Wal-Mart will abandon plans to build three new stores in DC and it will review the financial and legal implications of not opening three others that are currently under construction if the city implements the “living wage” legislation. This “living wage” bill – which was approved by a vote of 8 to 5 on July 10 – requires retailers operating in retail spaces of 75,000sf or greater and with corporate sales of $1 billion or more, to pay a minimum wage of $12.50/hour. DC’s minimum wage is currently $8.25 – one dollar higher than the federal minimum wage, according to The Washington Post.
